British Values Day

At the end of last term, the whole school took part in a carousel of five activities across the school, celebrating British Values:

Mutual Respect‘we all respect each other and celebrate similarities and differences’. Children had a carpet session to discuss varying identifying features, eyes colour, languages spoken, likes , dislikes… The children then used recycled newspapers/magazines to create a fantasy portrait celebrating lots of differences all in one face.

Rule of Law ‘society works based on an agreed set of rules’. The children were introduced to the concept of the rule of law, through rules of board games, making people leaders of the game and exploring how to help people understand the rules and why they were required to all be able to play fairly and for the game to work.

Democracy‘citizens can choose their leaders and participate in decision making through voting’. Children had a choice of which activity the group would complete in this session. The children voted by standing under the picture card of the activity they wanted.

Tolerance – ‘we are all people, we are all equal’. The children looked at a range of animals and then considered their initial response to it. Pupils then imagined how they would feel if people responded to them in that way, then thought about how they would like people to respond to them instead.

Individual Liberty‘we have the freedom to live as we choose and challenge ourselves to be the best versions of ourselves’. The children worked together through a selection of challenges where they could prove their self-determination, through a timed and measured PE based activities.
